1955 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

1955-D WDDO-006 is a doubled die obverse on the 1955-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The eyelid is doubled to the south. The obverse is also a repunched mint mark, which Wexler's files number 1955-D 1¢ WRPM-045. Obverse markers: a gouge (dot) on the back of the nose, well south of the eye; a gouge (dot) under the left side of GOD's O; a gouge above LIBERTY's L and I, between them; a gouge (dot) above LIBERTY's E; and a wavering X-shaped pattern of scratches at the Y's upper right edge. Reverse markers: many mostly horizontal scratches through ONE's N and every letter of CENT, and a short diagonal scratch left of the middle of CENT's T. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments explain that two separate dies were once filed under this one number; they were renumbered arbitrarily, one keeping the number 1955-D 1¢ WDDO-006 while the other became 1955-D 1¢ WDDO-014.
