1955 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1955-D WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1955-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. An extra eyelid shows south of the normal one. Obverse Stage A has a diagonal scratch to the mint mark's left; a short diagonal scratch above the date's 1 and 9; a long scratch heading SW from the lower part of LIBERTY's Y; a series of diagonal scratches behind the lower bust; a diagonal field scratch right of the upper forehead; many short scratches heading NE from the mouth and the bridge of the nose; a series of horizontal scratches left of IN; a horizontal scratch above GOD's O; and a short diagonal scratch under TRUST's T and R. On Stage B all of these remain, though weaker. On Stage C most are very weak or gone; the scratch beside the mint mark is extremely weak but visible, and the scratch from the Y and the one under TR can still be seen. Reverse Stage A has scratches joining the left wheat tip to the E of E PLURIBUS; light vertical scratches between ONE's O and N; a row of tooth-like scratches along the lower edge of the diagonal of ONE's N; vertical scratches through the CE of CENT; strong vertical scratches right of CENT's T; a series of mostly vertical scratches NW of UNITED's U; diagonal scratches left of the O in OF; and strong scratches through the E and S of STATES and AMERICA's last A. On Stage B these are all visible but weaker, and a light crack appears along the upper left wheat stalk's outer edge. On Stage C most are extremely weak or gone. What remains: the scratches linking the left wheat tip to E PLURIBUS, those left of the O in OF, the vertical scratches between ONE's O and N, and a few of the vertical scratches through STATES' E and S. A die chip and a curved crack reaching the rim now show on the upper left wheat lines. John A. Wexler submitted Stages A and B, and James C. Moreland Stage C. CONECA lists it as 2-O-IV and Coppercoins as 1955D-1DO-002.
