Description
Doubling shows as an extra eyelid to the south of the normal eyelid. Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: A diagonal die scratch shows to the left of the mint mark. A short, diagonal die scratch shows above the 1 and 9 in the date. A long die scratch runs southwest from the lower Y in LIBERTY. A series of diagonal die scratches show behind Lincoln’s lower bust. A diagonal die scratch shows in the field right of Lincoln’s upper forehead. Numerous short die scratches run northeast from Lincoln’s mouth and the bridge of his nose. A series of horizontal die scratches show to the left of IN. A horizontal die scratch runs above the letter O in GOD. A short, diagonal die scratch shows below the letters T and R in TRUST. Stage B: All Stage A die markers are present, but weaker. Stage C: Most Stage A die markers are either becoming very weak or are worn away. The die scratch to the left of the mint mark is extremely weak, but still visible. The die scratch southwest from the lower Y in LIBERTY and the die diagonal scratch below the letters T and R in TRUST are still visible. Reverse: Stage A: Die scratches connect the left wheat tip to the letter E in E PLURIBUS. Light, vertical die scratches show between the O and N in ONE. A series of “tooth-like,” die scratches show along the lower edge of the diagonal crossbar of the N in ONE. Vertical die scratches run through the CE in CENT. Strong vertical die scratches show to the right of the T in CENT. A series of mostly vertical die scratches show to the northwest of the U in UNITED. Diagonal die scratches show to the left of the O in OF. Strong die scratches run through the letters E and S in STATES and last A in AMERICA. Stage B: All Stage A die markers are visible, but weaker. A light die crack shows on the outer edge of the upper left wheat stalk. Stage C: Most Stage A die markers are extremely weak or worn away. Remaining markers from Stage A include the die scratches between the left wheat tip and E in E PLURIBUS, the die scratches left of the letter O in OF, the vertical die scratches between the letters O and N in ONE, and a few of the vertical die scratches running through the letters E and S in STATES.
