1955-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Designated DDO-001 for the 1955-D Lincoln Wheat cent, this doubled die obverse displays strong spread on the digits 19 of the date, along with the upper lapel, ear, eye, nose, lips, and chin of Lincoln's portrait. Cross-referenced as FS-101 (Fivaz-Stanton 21.93), this is the primary doubled die obverse for the Denver Mint issue of this date, not to be confused with the far more famous 1955 Philadelphia doubled die. The coin is struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc, weighing 3.11 grams at 19 mm diameter. The die is tracked under UVC-1858 with DMR-016 and shows a rich progression through three die states: Stage A at early die state shows die scratches inside the 9 of the date with the reverse also at EDS; Stage B at mid die state exhibits a light die crack running east-west across the shoulder and a small die chip on the T of CENT on the reverse; Stage C at late die state shows the earlier die scratches worn away, a light die crack on the forehead, and the reverse also at LDS. This variety was cataloged by VarietyVista within the Lincoln Wheat Cents 1909-1958 series. The strong doubling on Lincoln's facial features makes this an attractive variety for cherry-picking from rolls and dealer stock, and the FS-101 cross-reference confirms its recognition by the Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties.
