1955 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

Designated DDO-001 for the 1955-D Lincoln wheat cent and numbered WDDO-001 by Wexler, this doubled die obverse shows strong spread on the 19 of the date and on Lincoln's chin, lips, nose, eye, ear and upper lapel. Both catalogs give the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (21.93), which Wexler writes FS-01-1955D-101 (021.93). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class I counterclockwise spread on the 19, the center fold of the vest, Lincoln's eye and the lower ear. Obverse stage A has two parallel northwest scratches linking the tops of the 1 and 9 with the beard, short NNE scratches from the bottom inside of the 9, and a SW-NE scratch left of the top of the head. Stage B adds a WNW-ESE crack across the shoulder. In stage C the earlier scratches are very faint and a crack leaves the eyebrow heading northwest and then west. Reverse stage A has three short scratches to the left of the C in CENT: SW-NE by its upper part, SSW-NNE by its lower part, and one running south from its bottom left. Reverse stage B adds a small chip on the T of CENT. In reverse stage C the earlier scratches are gone, and two small gouges lie above the upper right wheat stem with one more below it. John A. Wexler submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-IV+VIII, Crawford as CDDO-001, and Coppercoins as 1955D-1DO-001. VarietyVista credits Harold Linnen with the report. Under its marker codes UVC-1858 and DMR-016, stage A has scratches inside the 9 of the date with both sides early. Stage B has a light east-west crack on the shoulder and a small chip on the T of CENT, both middle die state. Stage C has the scratches worn off, a light crack on the forehead, and both sides late.
