1954 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-002 for the 1954 Roosevelt Silver Dime, this variety displays light spread on the date numerals, the JS designer's initials for John R. Sinnock at the base of Liberty's neck truncation, and the inscription WE TRUST — three elements concentrated in the lower obverse that collectively indicate a localized hub displacement during the die-sinking process. Die markers UVC-254 and DMR-004 identify the specific working die across three documented stages. Stage A represents Early Die State (unconfirmed), when the doubling would appear at maximum sharpness. Stage B is also unconfirmed for Mid Die State. Stage C reaches Late Die State with a diagnostic die gouge on the right side of the 9 of the date — a progressive marker that developed as the die accumulated stress, while the reverse also shows LDS characteristics. The 1954 Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver, 10% copper composition at 2.50 grams on 17.9mm planchets. With a mintage of 114,010,000 pieces, the 1954-P is a common date that nonetheless supports legitimate die varieties worthy of specialist attention. Examine the date, JS initials, and WE TRUST under 7x to 10x magnification for subtle broadening of design elements.
