Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 1954-D 1c WDDO-003 with no other known cross-references, this doubled die obverse on the 1954-D Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits doubling under the left side of the horizontal bar of the 4 in the date — a precisely localized feature affecting only a specific portion of a single date digit. The obverse die markers include a die scratch running NNE from the top of the chin and a SW to NE die scratch between the lower 9 and 5 in the date. The reverse carries a die scratch running south from the bottom left of the N in UNITED through the O in OF, plus numerous SW to NE die scratches through the E PLU in E PLURIBUS. The extreme localization of the doubling — under one side of one crossbar of one digit — indicates the hub displacement was minimal, producing detectable separation only at the precise geometric point where the horizontal bar's edge creates maximum sensitivity to lateral offset. The Lincoln Wheat Cent's date digits, hand-punched into the master die in earlier eras but hub-transferred by 1954, sit in the lower right obverse field where their relatively isolated position against the flat field background makes even subtle doubling diagnostically accessible under magnification. The 1954-D was struck at the Denver Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc at 3.11 grams with a 19.0 mm diameter, during the post-war era of high Denver production. The numerous die scratches through E PLU on the reverse provide a rapid authentication starting point, identifiable under low magnification before proceeding to the more demanding examination of the 4 digit's horizontal bar under 10x to 15x magnification where the doubling can be confirmed.
