1954-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Fifth in the doubled die obverse catalog for the 1954-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDO-005 presents a medium spread resulting from a light hubbing on the I of IN and the LIB of LIBERTY. The combination of medium spread from a light hubbing parallels the mechanism seen on other mid-1950s Lincoln Cent DDOs: a brief secondary hub contact that nonetheless produced enough angular displacement to create visible thickening on the affected letters. The doubling concentrates on a compact cluster of obverse elements — the first letter of the motto and the opening three letters of LIBERTY — rather than spreading across the full legend, suggesting the hub distortion was localized. The 1954-D was struck at the Denver Mint in 95% copper, with Denver producing the largest share of Lincoln Cents that year. Die markers include UVC-3511 and DMR-012. Three die stages document the progression: Stage A records both obverse and reverse at Early Die State, while Stage B at Mid Die State and Stage C at Late Die State remain unconfirmed. The confirmed Early Die State pairing indicates that the best-documented specimens come from early in the die's service life, when the doubling would appear sharpest.
