Description

Third documented doubled die obverse for the 1954 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDO-003 displays a medium spread on the 4 in the date. Cross-referenced as UVC-1829 and DMR-009, this variety has been tracked through three die stages: Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed, Stage B at obverse mid-die state shows die chips on the vertical and horizontal bars of the T in CENT on the reverse in late die state, and Stage C at late die state is unconfirmed. The medium spread confined to the final digit of the date is a common pattern in doubled die varieties, where outermost design elements near the die rim are most susceptible to showing spread from hub misalignment. The die deterioration at Stage B — die chips on the T of CENT — provides a useful secondary marker for confirming both the die identity and approximate die state. The 1954-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck during the penultimate decade of the wheat reverse design, which continued through 1958 before being replaced by Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse.
