1953 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista on the 1953 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, DDR-002 is a doubled die reverse variety produced when the working die received misaligned hubbing impressions during manufacture. VarietyVista assigns UVC-0815 and DMR-005 to this variety. Washington Quarters of 1953 are 90% silver issues bearing John Flanagan's Washington portrait and the heraldic eagle reverse. Die stages are documented in three phases, all currently unconfirmed: Stage A is early die state, Stage B is mid-die state, and Stage C is late die state. Doubled die reverse varieties on Washington Quarters from the silver era are catalogued by VarietyVista but are considerably less common in specialist literature than Lincoln cent doubled dies, partly because of lower mintage volumes and partly because the complex reverse design makes subtle doubling harder to detect without reference photography. UVC-0815 and DMR-005 are the primary attribution anchors. Collectors should examine reverse legend lettering and eagle feather details under strong magnification, comparing against published reference images and confirming against both VarietyVista codes before finalizing attribution.
