1953 Variety WMHO-001

Description
Entering its third year of service, the master hub responsible for WMHO-001 continued stamping its clockwise doubling into every working hub produced for the 1953 Philadelphia Washington Quarter. The moderate spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, pivoting from near 3:00, persists as the defining diagnostic. The Wexler Team catalogs it as 1953 25-cent WMHO-001, with CONECA classification SD-4-O-V. Philadelphia`s no-mintmark quarters from 1953 were struck in 90% silver. Understanding the die-making chain clarifies why this variety is so pervasive: the master hub impresses working hubs, working hubs impress working dies, and working dies strike coins. Doubling at the master hub level cascades through every subsequent generation. By 1953, three years of repeated hubbing sessions would have introduced cumulative wear on the master hub`s surfaces, potentially influencing the crispness of the doubling transferred to new working hubs. Nonetheless, the fundamental clockwise displacement remained present. Collectors examining 1953 Philadelphia quarters under magnification can verify the variety by locating the secondary impression on the motto letters displaced in a clockwise direction.

- Discovered by John A. Wexler Cross References: CONECA: SD-4-O-V Comments: Because the master hub is designed to be used over a period of several years, this one was used during the period from 1951 through 1954. Consequently most Washington quarters during that period of time will show this doubling. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will be due to wear on the working hubs, wear on the working dies, and wear on the coins themselves.
