1953 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001 (written 1953 Pr WDDO-001), is a doubled die obverse on the 1953 Proof Lincoln wheat cent with very strong spread on the 19 of the date and extra thickness on the RTY of LIBERTY. Both catalogs give the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (21.7), which Wexler writes FS-01-1953-101 (021.7). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class II spread toward the center on the 19, a lesser spread toward the center on the ERTY of LIBERTY, and extra thickness on the eyelid, which has a notch at its right tip. On the obverse a diagonal scratch lies within the 9's upper loop, a gouge (dot) sits left of the 1, and a short vertical scratch lies between the top of the N in IN and the G in GOD. On the reverse a gouge (dot) lies southeast of the right wheat stem's tip. Delma K Romines submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-II and Coppercoins as 1953P-1DO-001P. VarietyVista identifies it as a proof and does not name a reporter. Under its marker codes UVC-1813 and DMR-003, stage A has a gouge on the lapel southeast of the buttonhole, with both sides in a very early die state, and stage B has both sides early. In stage C the obverse is middle and a scratch from the N of UNITED to the C of CENT is also middle. In stage D the obverse is late-middle and that reverse scratch is weak to missing, late state. Stage E has a north-south scratch on the neck and a scratch from the first A of AMERICA south to the left stem, both late die state.
