Description

Representing a fundamentally different error mechanism than a standard doubled die, the 1953-D Franklin Half Dollar WWHO-001 is a doubled working hub obverse — meaning the doubling occurred not during the creation of an individual working die but during the creation of the working hub itself. When the master die impresses the working hub, a misalignment between impressions transfers doubled design elements into the hub, which then propagates that doubling to every working die made from it. This hub-level origin means multiple working dies can carry the same doubling pattern, and the die markers will vary among the different working dies affected — a diagnostic note explicitly recorded for this variety. Attributed by the Wexler Team under the designation 1953-D 50c WWHO-001, the doubling manifests as a spread toward the center on GOD with light extra thickness on IN and LIBERTY. The center-directed spread suggests the hub shifted slightly between impressions during its creation, producing doubled images that converge toward a central pivot point. No reverse varieties are currently known in conjunction with this obverse hub doubling. The 1953-D Franklin Half Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint during the mid-point of the Franklin series, which ran from 1948 through 1963. John R. Sinnock designed the obverse portrait of Benjamin Franklin, and the 1953-D saw substantial mintage as half dollars remained in active circulation.
