1952 Proof Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

1952 WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 1952 proof Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. Here a reverse hub of Type B (the proof style) was impressed over a Type A reverse (the circulation style). The doubling appears on the eagle's talons, the center arrowhead, the lower left branch, the leaves over the QU of QUARTER, the lower UN of UNITED, and inside many letters of QUARTER DOLLAR and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Its obverse is the thick letter type, with a gouge south of the I of IN. On the reverse, a large curving scratch lies between the eagle's legs and reaches onto its right leg; a gouge sits on the eagle's right wing at its top, SSW of the beak; and scratches lie on the upper D of UNITED. Herbert Hicks submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-R-III. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
