Description

Third cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1952 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDO-003 displays light spread beneath the TY of LIBERTY, on Lincoln's bow tie, and under the last T of TRUST. Attributed in the VarietyVista system as UVC-3481 and DMR-006, three die stages are recorded: Stage A is an early die state characterized by a die scratch under the G of GOD, a die scratch in front of the forehead, and a die scratch between the A and T of STATES. Stage B documents a mid-die state and Stage C a late die state, both unconfirmed. The light degree of doubling on DDO-003 places it below the more dramatic doubled dies in visibility, though the spread across three distinct design elements — LIBERTY, the tie, and TRUST — confirms genuine hub doubling rather than machine doubling or strike anomaly. The 1952 Philadelphia issue was struck in bronze composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, continuing the standard Wheat Cent composition that had been in use since 1909 with only the wartime interruptions of 1943-1945. Collectors seeking this variety should focus on the TY junction of LIBERTY for the clearest evidence of displacement.
