1952-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

A combination variety on the Lincoln Wheat Cent, WDDO-003 pairs a doubled die obverse showing an extra eyelid northeast of the main eyelid with a repunched mintmark independently cataloged as WRPM-017 in the Wexler RPM Files. Obverse die markers include a short, nearly horizontal die scratch just east of center of the ear, a die gouge dot in the field above the R in LIBERTY, and a short but strong die gouge running diagonally near the vest to the west of the upper mintmark. No significant reverse markers have been noted. The extra eyelid is a diagnostically compelling feature, as it falls in an area where collectors naturally examine Lincoln's portrait detail, making it discoverable during routine inspection. The dual attribution as both DDO and RPM elevates this variety's appeal among specialists who prize combination varieties for their relative scarcity compared to single-attribution dies.
