1951-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Attributed by VarietyVista with die marker reference UVC-1799 DMR-022, this 1951 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a medium doubled die obverse spread visible under BE of LIBERTY. A mintmark positioning diagnostic assists with attribution: the S is set slightly below a line drawn from the tail of the 9 to the tail of the 5, with its right edge lining up with the left edge of the 5. Three die stages document the production life of this die: Stage A represents the early die state, Stage B shows both the obverse and reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C represents the late die state. The mint mark position relative to the date digits provides a quick screening method before examining the more subtle doubled die features under magnification. Struck in the standard 95% copper bronze composition at the San Francisco Mint during the post-war economic boom, the 1951-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was part of the final era of Wheat Cent production before the Lincoln Memorial reverse replaced it in 1959. The medium spread under BE of LIBERTY, while requiring magnification to confirm, is diagnostically consistent and provides a reliable attribution point for DDO-001 among 1951-S varieties.
