1951 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Pivoting counterclockwise from approximately 5 o'clock, the Wexler-attributed 1951 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-004 exhibits a close spread on IGWT — IN GOD WE TRUST. This counterclockwise rotation concentrates visible doubling on motto letters positioned opposite the pivot axis, where angular separation between primary and secondary hub impressions is widest. The close intensity requires careful magnification to resolve the secondary impressions adjacent to the primary design. A notable reverse die marker aids attribution: light die scratches running north-northeast from the inside of the C in AMERICA provide independent confirmation of the working die. No significant obverse die markers have been documented beyond the doubling itself. This Philadelphia Mint issue was struck in Victor David Brenner's bronze composition — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — at 3.11 grams. Focus on IN GOD WE TRUST under 10x magnification for counterclockwise rotational displacement, then verify the reverse die scratches near the C in AMERICA.
