1951 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
Third in the Wexler Team's DDO census for the 1951 Lincoln wheat cent, WDDO-003 is cataloged as 1951 1¢ WDDO-003 with no additional cross-references established. The 1951 Philadelphia cent had a mintage of 284.6 million pieces, struck during the early Korean War period when the U.S. economy was simultaneously supporting military operations overseas and robust domestic growth. Cent production during the early 1950s occupied a middle ground between the enormous wartime outputs of the 1940s and the billion-coin runs that would become standard in the 1960s. At least three DDO varieties have been documented for the 1951 date, indicating that hub misalignment occurred on multiple obverse dies during that year's production. The multi-impression hubbing process used to create each working die involved pressing the master hub into a softened die blank multiple times, with each impression deepening and refining the design relief. Between impressions, the die was removed, re-annealed, and repositioned for the next hubbing, and this repositioning step introduced the possibility of slight displacement. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait had been the cent's obverse design for 42 years by 1951, and the mature hub produced consistent, well-detailed coins when properly aligned. WDDO-003 documents a moment when that alignment was imperfect, leaving a permanent record of production variability on every coin struck from the affected die. Collectors seeking this variety should examine rolls of 1951 cents with a loupe, paying particular attention to LIBERTY, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST, where doubled die separation is typically most apparent.
