1951 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Distinguished from other 1951 Philadelphia DDOs by its doubling location, DDO-002 on the 1951 Jefferson Nickel exhibits light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY — two separate obverse inscriptions affected by a single hub misalignment event. Die markers UVC-867 and DMR-004 confirm this working die. While many Jefferson nickel DDOs concentrate their visible doubling on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, DDO-002's involvement of IN GOD WE TRUST sets it apart diagnostically. On Felix Schlag's obverse, IN GOD WE TRUST appears in small lettering along the left field above LIBERTY, and the simultaneous doubling of both inscriptions indicates the hub displacement direction intersected these vertically arranged texts at angles producing visible spread in both zones. The 1951 nickel was struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) at the Philadelphia Mint without a mintmark. Light spread on the fine IN GOD WE TRUST lettering can be subtle — collectors should examine under at least 7x magnification with side lighting, focusing particularly on the vertical strokes of I, D, and T where even slight offset becomes measurable.
