1951 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

1951-D WDDO-013 is a doubled die obverse on the 1951-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling takes the form of two closely spaced extra eyelids southeast of the normal one; by Stage B the two can no longer be told apart. Obverse Stage A has vertical scratches across the date area and to the left of the 1; a concentric scratch at the rim between GOD's D and WE's W; vertical scratches in front of the head and behind it; and vertical scratches through the ERTY of LIBERTY, reaching down to the back of the bust. On Stage B most of these are extremely weak or gone, but the concentric rim scratch is still visible, as are remnants of the vertical scratches through LIBERTY's T and Y and of those from the lower bust; a light crack shows over the right side of VDB. On Stage C that crack reaches through the back of the bust toward the rim, and the rim scratch and the remnants through the T and Y and at the back of the lower bust remain, though weak. Reverse Stage A has scratches running in several directions within the opening of CENT's C; gouges in the lower opening of CENT's E; a curved scratch through the lower part of CENT's T; a long scratch from the F of OF to the first S of STATES; and a series of distinctive curved scratches through the ERICA of AMERICA. Wexler notes a change of reverse die at Stage B, which has two gouges (dots) in the field south of PLURIBUS' I and U; a gouge (dot) inside the lower part of ONE's O; a gouge (dot) NW of CENT's C; vertical scratches right of the top of CENT's T; a series of vertical scratches heading north above the NIT of UNITED; and a light scratch heading south from the O of OF, off its lower right edge. On Stage C all the Stage B markers remain but are weaker, and new are a gouge (dot) south of UNUM's M and three gouges (dots) left of the O in OF. Wexler's reverse Stage C list also includes die chips on TRUST's T, along its lower right edge, a letter of the obverse legend. Brian Ribar submitted Stage A and Daniel Griffin Stages B and C.
