Description

Doubling shows as two closely spaced doubled eyelids to the southeast of the normal eyelid. The distinction between the two eyelids is not visible by Stage B. Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: Vertical die scratches run through the date area and left of the 1 in the date. A concentric die scratch shows at the rim between the D in GOD and the W in WE. Vertical die scratches show in front and back of Lincoln’s head. Vertical die scratches run through the letters ERTY in LIBERTY and down to the back of Lincoln’s bust. Stage B: Most Stage A die markers are extremely weak or worn away. The concentric die scratch at the rim between the D in GOD and W in WE is still visible. Remnants of the vertical die scratches through the letters T and Y in LIBERTY are still visible. Remnants of the vertical die scratches from Lincoln’s lower bust are visible. A light die crack shows over the right side of the VDB initials. Stage C: The die crack over the VDB initials now extends toward the rim through the back of Lincoln’s bust. The concentric die scratch at the rim between the D in GOD and W in WE is weakly visible. Remnants of the vertical die scratches through the letters T and Y in LIBERTY and the back Lincoln’s lower bust are weakly visible. Reverse: Stage A: Multi-directional die scratches show in the opening of the C in CENT. Die gouges show in the lower opening of the E in CENT. A curved die scratch runs through the lower T in CENT. A long die scratch runs from the F in OF to the first S in STATES. A series of distinctive, curved die scratches run through the letters ERICA in AMERICA. Stage B: Reverse die changed. Two die gouges (dots) show in the field to the south of the I and U in PLURIBUS. A die gouge (dot) shows inside the lower O in ONE. A die gouge (dot) shows to the northwest of the C in CENT. Vertical die scratches show to the right of the upper T in CENT. A series of vertical die scratches run north above the letters NIT in UNITED. A light die scratch runs south from the lower right edge of the O in OF. Stage C: All Stage B die markers are visible, but weaker. A die gouge (dot) shows to the south of the M in UNUM. Die chips show on the lower right edge of the T in TRUST. Three die gouges (dots) show to the left of the O in OF. A vertical die scratch runs below Lincoln’s chin to the front of his bowtie. Diagonal die scratches show in front of Lincoln’s mouth and nose. Vertical die scratches show to the right of Lincoln’s forehead. A series of die gouges show around the R in TRUST. Nearly vertical die scratches run through LIBERTY. A die crack runs north onto the back of Lincoln’s bust, left of the VDB initials. Reverse: A strong diagonal die gouge shows to the right of the upper E in ONE. Light diagonal die scratches show between the upper N and T in CENT. Vertical concentric die scratches run through the U in UNITED. Concentric die scratches run through and above the letters TES in STATES. A diagonal die scratch connects the lower A and M in AMERICA.
