1950 Franklin Half Dollar - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

1950 WDDR-003 is a doubled die reverse on the 1950 Franklin half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Extra thickness shows on HALF DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM (EPU), USA (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA) and the outer parts of the bell. The obverse has many scratches and gouges. NW/SE scratches cross the 1 of the date, run above the date and lie in front of the face, and an old NE/SW scratch sits at the throat. A strong NW/SE scratch connects the designer's initials (JRS) with the W in WE, and an E/W scratch lies right of LIBERTY's B. Gouges sit halfway from IN's I to the back of the head, over the OD of GOD, and in the upper opening of TRUST's R. On the reverse, strong N/S scratches lie between EPU and the bell, to the right of the bell supports, and from the eagle to AMERICA's last A. STATES OF is crossed by NW/SE scratches, and an E/W scratch crosses the D in UNITED. HALF's H has a thin scratch heading north, thin NW/SE scratches cross DOLLAR's D and the clapper, and there is a gouge over DOLLAR's first L. Keith Christenson submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
