1948-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1948-D 1-cent WDDO-006, this doubled die obverse variety on the Lincoln Wheat Cent is notable for combining two distinct die errors on a single obverse die. The Lincoln Wheat Cent, designed by Victor David Brenner, was struck at the Denver Mint in a 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc composition, weighing 3.11 grams at 19.05 mm diameter. The primary doubled die feature manifests as an extra eyelid visible below Lincoln's normal eyelid — a classic hub doubling signature that experienced variety collectors recognize immediately. Remarkably, this same obverse die is also a repunched mintmark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1948-D 1-cent WRPM-040, making specimens doubly collectible. Obverse die markers include a die gouge centered below the W in WE, and a die clash visible at the throat under Lincoln's chin. Die scratches run in a northeast-to-southwest direction left of and through the digits 19 in the date. On the reverse, worn die clashes appear on the lower right of C and upper right of N in CENT, along with a small die gouge (appearing as a dot) positioned left of the N in CENT approximately two-thirds from the top. The convergence of doubled die and repunched mintmark on a single die pair makes this an especially appealing variety for attribution specialists.
