1948-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
ErrorDescription
A clockwise spread is visible on the second T in TRUST, the 48 in the date, and the bottom of the L in LIBERTY on this 1948 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, which also carries a repunched mint mark on the same die. The obverse is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1948-D 1c WRPM-037, a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunch, making this a DDO/RPM combination variety. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 1c WDDO-005. A die crack on the reverse runs along the left side of the right wheat stalk to the left of the top three wheat grains. Combination varieties pairing a doubled die obverse with a repunched mint mark on the same die are especially valued by specialists, as both attributions are confirmed simultaneously on every specimen from the die pair. The clockwise spread and the tilted repunch represent two distinct manufacturing anomalies preserved on one die, documenting separate moments in the die preparation process at Denver. Late 1940s Wheat Cents from Denver are fertile ground for RPM hunting due to the manual punch method.
