1946-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Exhibiting well-defined Class II distorted hub doubling, this 1946-S Jefferson Nickel shows pronounced spread on LIBERTY, the Monticello star, and the date, making WDDO-009 one of the more visually accessible doubled die obverses in the postwar nickel series. Discovered by Brian A. Ribar, the variety results from hub distortion during die-sinking, where the working hub deformed slightly between impressions to produce the characteristic spread. Obverse die markers include a strong slanted die scratch below the RT of LIBERTY and numerous die scratches from Jefferson's forehead. The reverse carries a strong die scratch between the D of UNITED and the first S of STATES, plus a slanted die scratch inside the upper portion of the M in UNUM. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1946-S WDDO-009, this San Francisco Mint issue demonstrates how Class II distorted hub doubling can produce bold, collector-friendly spread across multiple design elements simultaneously.
