1946-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

Also struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1946, the WDDO-007 was attributed by Brian A. Ribar and shows very close Class II distorted hub doubling on IN GOD, the star, and the date on the Jefferson nickel. The proximity of the doubling to the primary design elements characterizes it as very close, meaning the separation between the original and doubled impressions is narrow but still detectable under magnification. The obverse is marked by a strong die gouge in the field to the left of Jefferson's eye and a strong die gouge below the L of LIBERTY near the back of the head, both prominent diagnostics for authentication. On the reverse, strong die gouges appear above the left arch, complemented by a strong die scratch extending from the right top portion of the dome. This variety is cataloged under Wexler designation 1946-S WDDO-007. The abundance of strong die gouges on both sides makes this variety unusually well-documented for attribution, as collectors can verify multiple independent markers to confirm the identification before examining the doubling itself on the motto, star, and date.
