Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as "1946 1-cent WDDO-006," this Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a very close spread towards the center on WE TRUST — the final two words of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait. The centripetal displacement pushed the secondary impression inward relative to the primary, producing subtle broadening of the letterforms in WE TRUST that requires careful high-magnification examination to detect. The very close intensity places this among the more challenging varieties to identify, as the secondary contours nearly overlap the primary image. No significant obverse die markers have been documented, meaning initial screening relies on the doubling characteristics themselves. The reverse carries a useful confirmation point: a small die gouge visible as a raised dot just below the right side of the M in UNUM, providing an independent working-die diagnostic. No cross-references to other attribution systems are known. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — at 3.11 grams.
