1946 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team (Variety ID: 1946 1c WDDO-003), this 1946 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat cent displays hub doubling centered on the eye and motto. Extra eyelids are visible directly beneath and above the primary eyelid of Lincoln's portrait, and very slight doubling toward the center appears on GOD WE TRUST. Obverse die markers include parallel die scratches running southwest from the lower letters of IN. The reverse die is itself a minor doubled die catalogued separately as 1946 1c WDDR-004, making this a coin with documented doubling on both sides from a single die marriage. The reverse doubling shows a very close spread toward the center on the upper left wheat lines, the E in EPU, and the left dot. A die scratch runs south from the bottom right of the D in UNITED to the top of the M in AMERICA. The paired WDDO-003 and WDDR-004 die marriage is well known to Wheat cent specialists. The 1946 Wheat cent is a common date in the series, struck in bronze at Philadelphia, but attributed specimens with confirmed obverse and reverse doubling on the same die marriage represent a collector subset with documented reference support from the Wexler attribution system.
