Description

Fifteen doubled die obverses from a single date-mintmark combination illustrate the statistical nature of variety creation in high-volume coinage production. Denver's 1946 cent output of 315,690,000 pieces required manufacturing and consuming working dies at a rapid pace, and the probability that some fraction of those dies would receive imperfect secondary hub impressions increases in direct proportion to the total number produced. WDDO-015 adds another confirmed variety to the 1946-D catalog, each representing a die that captured a slight misalignment during the hubbing process and then transferred that doubled image to every coin it subsequently struck.
