Description

Among the diagnostic elements on Lincoln Wheat Cent obverses, the letters of LIBERTY often provide the most accessible starting point for DDO detection. The tall, vertically oriented strokes of this inscription amplify even minor lateral displacement, making secondary impressions visible at relatively modest magnification. The IN GOD WE TRUST motto, positioned along a curve above Lincoln's head, shows hub doubling in a different way — the curvature means that rotational or pivot doubling can appear to change direction across the length of the inscription. WDDO-013 from the 1946-D issue is the thirteenth doubled die obverse cataloged for Denver's first postwar bronze cent, a year that brought both compositional and operational changes to the Mint's cent production. The high sequential number testifies to the thoroughness with which attributors have examined this common date, mining its large surviving population for die variety documentation.
