Description

Copper-based alloys like the 95% copper bronze used for Lincoln Cents possess physical characteristics that influence how doubling appears on finished coins. Copper is a relatively soft metal that flows readily under the enormous pressure of a coin press, filling die cavities completely and reproducing fine detail with high fidelity. This means that even subtle hub doubling — displacement of just a few thousandths of an inch on the die face — can produce visible secondary images on the struck coin when examined under magnification. WDDO-009 from the 1946-D issue is the ninth doubled die obverse variety for Denver's postwar cent production, recorded in the Wexler catalog as part of the comprehensive documentation of mid-1940s die varieties.
