1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

A close spread toward the center appears on the date and across WE TRUST on this 1946-D Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse. The 1946 Lincoln Wheat Cent was the first cent issue following the end of World War II, returning to the pre-war bronze composition after the 1943 steel and 1944-45 shell-case copper years. No die markers are noted on the obverse as significant beyond the doubling itself. The reverse of this coin is also a doubled die, separately cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1946-D 1 cent WDDR-001. That reverse variety shows very strong extra thickness along with separation spread toward the center on EPU, the dots, both wheat ears, and both wheat stems — a substantially stronger and more visually dramatic reverse effect than the obverse spread. Additional reverse markers: horizontal die scratches between the upper N and T in CENT; a small die gouge (dot) above the right side of the D in UNITED. Cross-referenced as Wexler WDDO-007. The pairing of WDDO-007 and WDDR-001 on the same coin represents one of the more thoroughly documented obverse-and-reverse doubled die pairings in the 1946-D Lincoln Wheat Cent series.
