Description

Obverse design elements where doubling typically manifests on Lincoln Wheat Cents include the tall letters of LIBERTY positioned to the left of Lincoln's portrait, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST arcing above, and the date to the right. Each of these inscriptions contains fine serifs and precisely rendered strokes that reveal even minor hub displacement under appropriate magnification. WDDO-003 from the 1946-D issue is the third doubled die obverse documented for Denver's postwar production, still in the wartime alloy; the bronze used from 1909 through 1942 returned in 1947. Victor David Brenner's obverse design — adapted from a plaque he created for the centennial of Lincoln's birth — has proven remarkably productive for variety discovery, with its combination of portrait detail and multiple text elements providing numerous diagnostic points. The 1946-D's generous mintage ensures ample survivors for variety searching. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1946-D 1¢ WDDO-003.
