1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-021
Error
Description
Among the more subtle doubled dies in the 1946 Denver wheat cent series, WDDO-021 is identified by a partial extra eyelid visible above the front portion of Lincoln's normal eyelid. This doubling, though modest in spread, rewards careful examination under magnification. The obverse carries several useful die markers: a vertical die scratch to the left of the lower back of Lincoln's head, a scratch running south-southwest from the bottom of the ear, and another running north to south beside the upper ear. Additional scratches run from the northwest to the southeast alongside the forehead and nose, while a curving scratch rises north-northeast from the top of the 9 in the date. A short northeast-trending scratch appears at the right side of the D mintmark. Notably, the reverse die paired with this obverse is itself a doubled die, cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1946-D 1¢ WDDR-005, making this a scarce dual-doubled-die pairing. The variety is cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID 1946-D 1¢ WDDO-021 and was documented by the Wexler Team.
