Description

Attributed as DDO-006 for the 1946 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this doubled die obverse displays light spread on 946 of the date, with the 1 unaffected — consistent with doubling concentrated on the right portion of the date area. Die markers under UVC-2834 and DMR-030 document three stages: Stage A shows the obverse at early die state with die gouges through E PL of PLURIBUS on the reverse. Stage B finds both sides at mid-die-state, a stable period before significant failures developed. Stage C is late die state but unconfirmed, suggesting few specimens from the die's final strikes have been identified. Lincoln Wheat Cents from 1946 mark the first full year of post-war production at Denver, when coin demand surged as the economy transitioned to peacetime.
