Description

Bearing die markers UVC-822 and DMR-009, DDO-003 on the 1946-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits medium spread on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date. The 1946 Denver issue marks a historically significant transition: it was the first post-war year of production, when the Mint returned to standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) after three years of the wartime silver alloy. The reversion brought back the original 5.0-gram weight and the small D mintmark on the reverse near the base of Monticello, replacing the prominent large mintmark above the dome used on wartime issues. Medium spread indicates the hub displacement was sufficient to produce visible secondary images without magnification aids in favorable lighting, though confirmation requires careful examination at 5x or above.
