Extra thickness on LIBERTY, the star, and the date characterizes DDO-002 on the 1946-D Jefferson nickel, the second documented obverse doubled die for this Denver Mint issue. Each DDO for the 1946-D originates from a different working die that received a misaligned hub impression during manufacture. The 1946-D marks the first full year of post-war nickel production with the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel composition restored after four years of the silver wartime alloy, and Denver struck approximately 45.3 million nickels that year. The extra thickness classification means the secondary hub impression nearly coincided with the primary, yielding design elements that appear heavier than standard rather than showing distinct separation.
