Description
The 1945-S Mercury Dime RPM-005 shows the S mint mark repunched to the south (S/S South), with the initial impression positioned slightly above the final placement. The mint mark style is classified as MMS-006 with a Ball Serif form, one of several S punch configurations used at the San Francisco Mint during the final year of Adolph Weinman's Mercury Dime production. The southward repunching means the die sinker's first impression fell too high, and the correction punch landed at the correct lower position — under magnification, the top of the initial S is visible extending above the final mint mark. The 1945-S was the last San Francisco issue of the Mercury Dime, as the Roosevelt Dime replaced it the following year, giving RPM varieties from this date a last-year significance. Repunched mint marks are exclusive to the hand-punched era before approximately 1990, and Mercury Dime RPM varieties remain popular with collectors who appreciate the precision required to detect and attribute mint mark positioning differences.
