Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1945-S 1¢ WDDR-001, this Lincoln Wheat Cent holds the primary doubled die reverse listing for the 1945-S date-mint combination. A close Class II spread towards the center shows on the tips of the left wheat lines and the tops of the letters in E PLURIBUS UNUM — a convergent doubling pattern where the secondary hub impression shifted inward relative to the primary, creating doubling visible on the interior side of affected design elements. The obverse of this variety is also documented as a repunched mintmark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1945-S 1¢ WRPM-005, displaying an S/S positioned northeast — making this a combination DDR/RPM variety with two independent minting anomalies. Die scratches running north-northwest to south-southeast through the 19 in the date serve as obverse markers, while the reverse shows a strong die clash mark between the lower C and E in CENT along with north-to-south die scratches running through the UN of UNITED. The die clash mark on the reverse documents an additional die event beyond the hub doubling and mintmark repunching, layering three distinct minting anomalies onto this single die pair. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1945, the final year of World War II, in standard bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait and the wheat ears reverse served from 1909 through 1958. The triple-anomaly nature of this variety — combining WDDR-001 hub doubling, WRPM-005 repunched mintmark, and die clash evidence — creates a specimen with exceptional numismatic documentation density.
