1945 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-026

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1945 1¢ WDDO-026, this Philadelphia-struck Lincoln wheat cent displays doubled die obverse characteristics centered on the portrait. Two extra eyelids appear south of the normal eyelid, providing a clear and distinctive identification feature even under modest magnification. Obverse die markers include die pitting to the right of the neck, a short die scratch extending west-southwest from the lower left O of GOD, and a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the W in WE. On the reverse, three parallel die scratches run north-northeast from the left inside of the first U in PLURIBUS, a small die gouge protrudes from the lower left side of the O in ONE, another protrudes from the bottom of the C in CENT, and a short vertical die gouge sits above the top right side of the T in CENT. The doubled eyelid effect is a popular attributable feature among Lincoln cent variety collectors because it is relatively easy to spot without specialized equipment. No other cross-references are currently known for this variety.
