1945 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1945 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1945 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The date and the letters of LIBERTY and IGWT carry strong Class VI extra thickness. Obverse Stage A: a scratch extending north from the top of the date's 1; a curving north-south gouge at the back of the chin; a gouge right of the center of the vest's center fold; vertical scratches just left of the back of the neck; scratches extending south from the 1 and 9 at their bottoms; and a scratch running south from under the chin. On Obverse Stage B only the scratch north of the 1 remains, along with the Stage A gouges, and clash marks appear just right of the throat and left of the back of the neck. Reverse Stage A: a vertical scratch low between UNUM's U and N, and a short NNW scratch from UNITED's N, at the upper center of its diagonal crossbar. On Reverse Stage B the UNUM scratch is gone; clash marks show between CENT's C and E and between its upper N and T; and a small gouge lies inside the C of CENT, low on its left side. Delma K. Romines submitted Stage A and David Mulberry Stage B. CONECA lists it as 1-O-VI and Coppercoins as 1945P-1DO-006. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
