Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista with markers UVC-1670 and DMR-011, the 1945 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat cent DDO-010 shows strong extra thickness on WE TRUST and the date, with medium extra thickness across LIBERTY. Doubled die obverses arise when the working die receives repeat hub impressions with slight misalignment, embedding a secondary design outline that transfers to every coin struck from it. Four die stages are documented. Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed). Stage B is Middle Die State (unconfirmed). Stage C records both the obverse and reverse at Late Die State. Stage D reaches Very Late Die State on the obverse, with the defining marker being a die crack running northwest from the E of ONE all the way to the last U of PLURIBUS — a long prominent crack serving as the unmistakable Stage D indicator. Collectors seeking the sharpest doubling should target Stage A and B examples; Stage D specimens with the die crack are sought by die-state specialists. The 1945 Lincoln Wheat cent was struck in bronze at Philadelphia. Stage B and C examples show the variety in its most consistently attributable state, with the doubling expression and reverse LDS confirmation accessible.
