1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1666 and DMR-007, the 1945 Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-006 presents light extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and WE TRUST. This regular strike variety from the final year of World War II-era cent production documents three die states. Stage A represents early die state, while Stage B captures mid-die state. The late die state Stage C develops a long die gouge extending from the back of Lincoln's shoulder to the Y of LIBERTY, with the reverse also reaching late die state. The progressive die gouge at Stage C provides a useful diagnostic for determining which specimens came from the latest impressions of this die. Light doubling on date, LIBERTY, and motto requires careful examination under magnification to detect, but once identified the spread becomes consistent across the affected elements. The 1945 date saw high mintage figures at Philadelphia, meaning patient roll searching may yield examples of this variety.
