1945 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-009
Error
Description
VarietyVista's catalog assigns UVC-209 and DMR-019 to the 1945 Jefferson Nickel DDR-009, a medium-spread doubled die reverse showing doubling on "UNUM" and "AMERICA." What makes this variety particularly noteworthy is its die marriage connection: the reverse die is listed as RPM-018, meaning it also carries a repunched mintmark — two distinct variety types coexisting on the same die. This dual attribution creates what collectors call a "combo variety," significantly enhancing the coin's interest and potential value beyond what either variety alone would command. The die progressed through three documented stages: Stage A in Early Die State remains unconfirmed; Stage B in Mid Die State introduces die scratches running North-South over the right roof of Monticello, with the obverse also showing MDS characteristics; Stage C in Late Die State shows the reverse die scratches worn away through continued use, with the obverse also exhibiting LDS wear. The 1945 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel belongs to the wartime "war nickel" series, struck in 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese — an emergency alloy adopted because nickel was a critical war material needed for armor plating and military equipment. War nickels are identifiable by their large mintmark above Monticello's dome, and the silver content gives them a distinctive lighter color compared to standard nickel-alloy issues. The combination of doubled die reverse and repunched mintmark on a silver war nickel creates an especially compelling collecting target for Jefferson Nickel variety specialists.
