1945 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Widely regarded as the most significant doubled die reverse for the wartime silver alloy Jefferson Nickel, the 1945-P DDR-001 delivers very strong spread on the right side of the Monticello building, the TICELLO of MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, and STATES OF, with extra thickness also visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Cross-referenced as FS-801 (030) in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this variety holds a prominent position among Jefferson Nickel error-variety collectors. VarietyVista catalogs it with UVC-230 and DMR-040 across three die states. Stage A is the unconfirmed early die state. Stage B reaches mid-die state, with die scratches running north-south on the upper reverse, and the obverse also at MDS. Stage C is unconfirmed at LDS. The reverse is also listed as RPM-039, indicating an additional repunched mintmark attribution. Struck on the 35% silver wartime alloy that gave these nickels their distinctive appearance, the DDR-001's strong doubling and FS-801 cross-reference make it one of the most actively pursued Jefferson Nickel varieties of the 1940s.
