1945 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling, this 1945 wartime silver Jefferson nickel shows an extremely close spread toward the center on STATES, with a possible repunched P mintmark adding a secondary point of interest. The wartime alloy — 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese — gives this issue its characteristic gray tone and the oversized P mintmark above Monticello that distinguished Philadelphia's wartime production. Reverse die markers are notably detailed: a die gouge (dot) and two north-south die scratches appear to the upper right of the fourth column on Monticello, a strong die gouge sits under MER of AMERICA, and another die gouge appears under the D of UNITED and TE of STATES. These multiple die markers provide robust attribution points beyond the doubling itself. The possible P/P notation suggests the large wartime mintmark may carry evidence of repunching, which would make this die doubly interesting as both a doubled die reverse and a potential RPM — though the repunch remains unconfirmed.
