1945 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID: 1945-D 1¢ WDDO-008, this doubled die obverse takes its place as the eighth numbered DDO variety for the 1945-D Lincoln Wheat cent. The Wexler Team's attribution establishes WDDO-008 within the middle tier of the sixteen-plus known DDO varieties for this wartime Denver Mint issue. Hub doubling on Lincoln Wheat cent obverses typically presents most clearly on the lettering elements — LIBERTY along the right rim, IN GOD WE TRUST across the upper field, and the four-digit date below Lincoln's bust — because these raised, sharply defined features reveal even fractional displacement more readily than the smoother contours of the portrait. The 1945-D cent saw production of over 266 million pieces, the last full year of wartime-level output before demand moderated with the end of World War II. Collectors working through 1945-D rolls and bags encounter these DDO varieties intermittently, but positive attribution requires more than simply finding doubling — the specific affected elements and spread direction must match the Wexler catalog entry for WDDO-008 exactly. Die-specific markers, when present, provide additional confirmation, though many Wexler Team entries for Wheat cent DDO varieties note no distinctive die markers beyond the doubling itself.
