1945-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Fifth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1945 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDO-005 exhibits an extra eyelid on Lincoln's portrait with the doubling spread directed southward. VarietyVista assigns Universal Variety Code UVC-1695 and Die Marker Reference DMR-022, and documentation notes three die stages: Early Die State, Mid-Die State, and Late Die State, tracking the die's service life from sharp initial impressions through progressive wear. This variety is a close companion to DDO-004, which shares the extra eyelid diagnostic but differs in spread intensity and mintmark placement — DDO-005 displays a stronger spread with the mintmark positioned higher on the die, providing the key distinction between the two. The eyelid doubling results from a secondary hub impression that shifted slightly downward, creating a doubled contour below Lincoln's eye that appears as an additional eyelid line under magnification. Struck at Denver during the final year of World War II, the 1945-D cent had returned to standard copper-alloy composition after the emergency steel (1943) and shell-case bronze (1944) compositions. Brenner's portrait was in its thirty-sixth year on a 19mm planchet.
