1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024

Description

Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1945-D 1c WDDO-024, this doubled die obverse on the 1945-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows moderate extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The spread is consistently distributed across those three legend elements, producing a thickened appearance under oblique lighting and moderate magnification. Obverse die markers include: remnants of a die clash visible at the front of the throat; a die crack running southwest to northeast from above the ear; and a second die crack running northeast from the bottom left corner of the bust. The clash remnant at the throat indicates the die experienced at least one clash event. Four reverse markers are documented: die gouges (dots) between the upper C and E in CENT; below the right side of the E in CENT; and to the left of the T in CENT. Lincoln Wheat Cents of 1945 returned to standard bronze alloy following the 1943 zinc-coated steel transition. The Denver Mint struck large quantities of cents in 1945, making the 1945-D a commonly encountered date with a meaningful variety catalog beneath its high mintage.
