1944-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006
Error
Description
Showing light extra thickness on LIBERTY and the date, this sixth doubled die obverse for the 1944-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck on recycled brass shell casing planchets during the second year of the wartime alternate composition. Die markers include UVC-1650 and DMR-018, with three documented stages: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die scratch running southwest from the G of GOD at Mid-Die State with the reverse also in MDS, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The mintmark is documented as MMS-005 with straight serifs, a classification that identifies the specific mintmark style punched into this die — different mintmark punches produced subtly different letter shapes, and these variations are tracked as part of the comprehensive attribution process. VarietyVista notes that a specimen is needed for new color photographs and die stage confirmation, indicating this variety's documentation remains an active research project. The 1944-S cent was produced at San Francisco using planchets fabricated from recycled ammunition shell casings, giving these coins a slightly different copper-zinc ratio than pre-war bronze cents. Six documented DDOs for the 1944-S date speaks to the systematic research applied to wartime-composition cents, where the combination of unusual composition and high production volume creates a rich landscape for variety discovery.
